Limit switch is triggered when material is present

The Stratasys Uprint Uses the same IC, EEPROM, or Chip as the newer plus series Stratasys printers.  The Dallas Semiconductor DS2432.

The DS2432 is a 1024-bit, 1-Wire EEPROM chip developed by Maxim Integrated. It is designed to operate in a low-power environment and communicates with other devices through a single contact point. The DS2432 is commonly used in applications such as authentication, security, and data storage. It provides an effective and reliable means of electronically storing and protecting critical data.

The chip contains eight memory pages, each of which is 128 bits in size. The pages can be individually programmed or read, and the entire chip can be locked for security purposes. The DS2432 also features a unique 64-bit ROM code that allows it to be identified on the 1-Wire network.

The DS2432 has the ability to operate on a low voltage range of 2.8V to 5.25V. This makes it ideal for use in battery-powered devices, where power consumption is a critical factor. It also supports an operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C, making it suitable for use in harsh environments.

Basically it's a milspec compliant chip: "MIL-SPEC" or "MIL-STD" describes products that meet certain military standards set by the United States Department of Defense (DoD) or other military organizations. These standards define requirements for the design, manufacture, testing, and quality assurance of products used by the military, such as equipment, vehicles, and electronic components.

The board, in addition to the DS2432, includes a built-in limit switch that is designed to detect whether filament is present.

The four contact pads on the board are used for the limit switch and the EEPROM.  Two of the pads are used for the 1-wire data connection, while the other two are used for the limit switch connection.

The chip is contained in an Injection molded carrier.  The carrier positions the chip in such a way that the four contacts can make contact with the system board to read/write the DS2432 and detect filament presence and runout. Once filament is passed through the carrier, the limit switch makes contact, and filament presence is detected.

When used with a Uprint, this circuit board can use either the volume on the DS2432 or the limit switch to determine when material has run out.
